Tassie

We awoke early to head to the Melbourne airport for our flight to Launceston in Tasmania.  We rented a car for our ten day tour of the island.  We went to our hotel to check in before heading back out to explore.

It was starting to rain so we decided to stop at Bunnings, much like our Lowe’s or Home Depot, to have a sausage.  Different charity groups serve sausages on the weekends out front of the stores.  Not a hot dog but more like a sausage, your choice is with or without grilled onions and is served on a piece of white bread.  I had heard about this from our previous visits so I was glad to get to experience it on this trip.

Design Tasmania is a gallery for wood and other crafts with a very nice gift shop.  The wooden furnishings on display were lovely with some of the available for purchase.  The gift shop was stocked with goods from various artist including textiles, wood, ceramic and jewelry.  We bought a couple of things before continuing our journey.

Tasmania is really all about enjoying nature.  Cataract Gorge is a local attraction with a lake, walking trails, a swimming pool, and a chairlift.  We had lunch in their cafe which overlooks the lake.  It was starting to rain but we thought it was light enough to still take the chairlifts up. Standing in line, the rain became heavier and we decided to skip out and find something indoors.

The Queen Victoria Museum has a wonderful exhibit of animals native to Tasmania.  You can see how biodiverse the island is from the variety of animals found here.  There’s also displays on the history of the area.  Upstairs was a photography exhibit on Olegas Truchanus.  Truchanus emigrated to Tasmania from Lithuania and became a great outdoor photographer documenting the many natural wonders of the island.  This exhibit shows many of his works he made while exploring the island.

We returned to the hotel for a rest before dinner.
